Do The Holidays Ever Make You Feel BLUE? Nov, 2002

Whatever holiday tradition you celebrate, holidays typically hold the promise of family togetherness, love and happiness. We tend to look forward to holiday traditions, but our expectations can often lead to disappointment. We may even find ourselves in the midst of the ""Holiday Blues."

This time of year is additionally stressful for those who work with the public. Here at CrackerBarrel, we work to provide a special dining experience for our guests. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our personal stress can impact how we provide that experience. Taking care of ourselves by recognizing those seasonal challenges is a way to diminish the pressure that accompanies this time of year - and better serve our guests, too! For examples of what can happen during the holidays to bring on the 'blues', click here to read:

Does the New Year Inspire You to Set New Goals? January, 2003

The start of a new year brings the
promise of change, new behaviors, and
setting new goals for yourself. It seems
like the perfect time to reassess your
life, and decide what you would like to
change and improve about your
situation. Almost all of us have made

before, only to find that we have
abandoned and given up on them by
the beginning of March! What is it about
certain resolutions that we cannot
maintain our original momentum
toward achieving them? Is it that we
develop unrealistic goals or we do not
provide ourselves with the means to
achieve them?

That's why it is important to see problem solving as Prevention-Oriented: if we look at issues BEFORE THEY BECOME PROBLEMS, we can save ourselves a lot of worry, time and misplaced energy.

GETTING YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER

is a way of looking at the "maintenance" aspect of our lives. How often do we explore essential areas and determine if some fine-tuning is needed? We have identified several "rooms"that might need an assessment. These are familiar areas of our lives that are important, and require regular upkeep. You might identify more areas that are important to you. Why not learn the art of stopping problems before they become unmanageable?

A Strategy for Coping May, 2003

We have often heard that change is life's only constant. World events, family relationships, and work pressures only seem to highlight this reality. Although not all change is negative, it is when we face unexpected events that we are challenged to respond. It is easy to become paralyzed with doubt, uncertainty, or fear.

We cannot prevent the stress of change. We CAN choose how we respond. Managing our lives well often means taking control. By learning some key tools for self-care, we can learn healthier ways of coping. We can also gain some skills to address some of life's unexpected challenges.

Ever wonder if you need help?July, 2003

It is common to think that asking for help is for "weak" individuals. We often tell ourselves that we "should" be able to manage our lives without assistance. These thoughts can make our struggles seem larger and more challenging than they really are. Actually, balancing our work and personal lives can be a challenge. It takes strength to recognize that we cannot always solve our problems alone. Sometimes, all we need is a plan, a roadmap leading to a healthier, more productive life.
