Parenting Skills

Were You Expecting This?

“Before I got married, I had six theories about bringing up children. Now I have six children and no theories."- John Wilmot

Did You Know?

Parenting involves many responsibilities. There are happy, positive times, but there
are also difficult and stressful days.

Parenting is a lifetime task. It is a role with overwhelming responsibilities, but the rewards are as great. Whether you anticipate the arrival of the first-born, raise tot-to-teens, or are a grandparent, you have found indescribable moments of humor, tenderness and joy.

For those who have chosen this important life role, I think you will agree there is no adequate method of preparation. There is no college course, no specification manual, or any procedural guidebook available. Parenting is the ultimate trial-and-error experiment! One recurrent theme in parenting resources is the effectiveness of parenting with positive discipline.

The following checklist demonstrates some healthy, positive parenting techniques:

Tell the child (s)he is loved – often
Show affection

Encourage positive behavior
Ignore negative behavior (unless it becomes disruptive)
Set rules and enforce them (These will vary according to the child’s age.)
Be consistent with rule enforcement
Model appropriate behaviors for children (parents’ actions speak loudly, and are what children will imitate)
Praise the child
