Back to School Shopping Tips

  • Sturdy backpacks trump designer jeans and a warm coat is going to win over cool boots when it comes to back-to-school purchases this year. With purse strings tightening everywhere, it's important to stay within your limits and have a plan to avoid overspending this fall, advises the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies. Here are some of their tips for managing back-to-school spending:

  • Set a budget. Ask your kids to help by having them check ads in the paper or online to figure out prices and decide what's realistic for your family.

  • Make a list of necessities. Have each child write down planned purchases that include clothing, shoes, backpacks and school supplies. Don't forget athletic equipment or other extracurricular needs.

  • Determine what you already have that will be reusable. Last year's backpacks, rulers, scissors, pens and highlighters might get a child through the first few months.

  • Do you want it vs. do you need it? Jeans and athletic shoes are two common items that a child needs, but expensive brands are what he or she wants. If only a certain brand will do, look for other ways to cut back. You might also give your children the option of putting some of those items on their holiday wish lists to spread the spending out.

  • Shop smart. Buy large quantities if it gives you a price break but not if it's merely convenient. Figure out where the sales and bargains are. Pick everything up at once to save on gas by not making multiple trips.

  • Pay now. Try to pay by cash, check or debit card. If you must charge some items, have a plan and an amount in mind that will enable you to pay the bill in full when it arrives.
