"Bringing Up Baby"

You’ve discovered you are pregnant or made a decision to adopt. You know that your life is about to change. Along with envisioning all things pink or blue, there are many things to think, plan and talk about before baby’s arrival. Between appointments, planning and shopping for the nursery, it’s important to have discussions and to make plans (be sure to include your significant other and/or important family members). It is easier to talk about these issues now while there is less stress and less demands.

Here are some things to consider if you are pregnant or adopting:

  • Where do you want to deliver your baby: hospital, birthing center, or home?
  • How much leave will you and/or your partner take from work?
  • What about childcare: daycare, family member or in-home child care provider?
  • Will you breastfeed or bottle feed your baby?
  • If it is a boy, how do you and/or your partner feel about circumcision?
  • How will household and baby care responsibilities be divided?
  • What are your beliefs about discipline? What about your partner’s beliefs?
  • What are your thoughts on financial planning for your child’s education?
  • Consider taking out or increasing life insurance coverage.
  • In what religious faith do you want to raise your child?
  • Consider making a will naming who you want to raise and care for your child, in the event of you and your partner’s death? How will the child be cared for financially? Discuss the matter with those you are considering to care for your child.

Bringing a new child home is exciting, but can also be overwhelming. With the new addition, come changes on the existing relationships within the family, new stressors and responsibilities. Talking and planning for these changes can decrease some of your fears and anxieties. The Cracker Barrel Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to discuss these issues and connect you with resources to help make this wonderful transition in life as painless as possible. Now, if only childbirth were that easy! Call us at 1-800-688-6330.
